『미 서부 & 밴쿠버 여행 By Servas』는 한국인들이 잘 찾아가지 않는 미국 서부 지역과 캐나다 밴쿠버를 다녀온 여행기이다. 캐나다 밴쿠버 주변 숨겨진 지역과 펄루스 밀밭, 캐넌 비치, 레이니어산, 올림픽 반도 등 미국서부 곳곳에 숨어있는 보물 같은 지역 등 캐나다와 미국 여행을 꿈꾸는 이들에게 도움이 되는 책이다. 우리말과 영어로 표현되어 읽는 재미를 더해준다.

작가의 여행기를 읽으니 작가가 다녀온 펄루스 밀밭을 배경으로 멋진 영화를 만들고 싶다. 시작과 끝이 어디인지 모를 광활한 밀밭을 상상해 본다. 작가가 다녀왔을 때는 초록 물결로 뒤덮인 봄날이었지만 잘 익은 밀밭이 황금물결로 춤추는 여름에는 또 어떤 풍광을 보여줄지 궁금해진다. 북유럽보다 위쪽인 곳에서만 빙하를 볼 수 있다고 생각했는데 위도가 높지 않은 시애틀 가까이에서도 볼 수 있다니 넓은 국토를 가진 미국이 마냥 부럽다. 뻔한 미국 여행만 가지 말고, 소도시 여행이 얼마나 매력적인지 이 책을 통해 느껴보길 바란다.

The travelogue was a wonderful account of the author’s time in the western United States and British Columbia, and provides a fantastic introduction to Servas. I enjoyed reading her stories of the different areas she visited. I have visited almost all, but enjoyed her descriptions of the areas, and the wonderful photos. May was our first Korean Servas visitor, and we learned a lot about Korea and Korean culture from her. Meeting people from different countries and cultures is one of the joys of Servas. I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in travelling to the same areas.
